Retreat 2017 in the Catskills will be hosted by Michael Ash Smith.
In November of 2016, my good friend Nirav (Nirav Photography) and I set out to create something unique. Our goal was to bring together like minded artists to discuss current issues in photography, have fun shooting (outside the style of a workshop), and provide a relaxed environment so we could pass along all we have learned as well as our philosophies on art and successfulness. There were discussions over food, drinks, and even some instrument playing. It was a chance to get re-energized after a long photography season, or perhaps before the start of one. It wasn't a workshop, in the way they've become to be known, which is why we called it a retreat. It was something special, fresh, and an experience I'll never forget. I've decided to offer this exact same concept, minus Nirav ( while I'd love for him to be present , he unfortunately cannot make it ), in the Northeast so it's accessible by more people in the region I live. Now, onto the upcoming retreat. Here are some of the key features:
- I want to discuss hot button issues in the current world of photography. I won’t be telling you how to attract more clients or telling you to find your own voice over and over again, but I do want to discuss the impact social media has on our art and where I think its headed. What we will discuss a lot is our strengths and weaknesses. I think you will relate to this more and ultimately help you in the long run.
- No time constrictions. I plan to start super early on a Wednesday and go through the night until we all crash. I want you to be exhausted after filling your brain up with a ton of info. Then we will get a good night’s rest, wake up and have a final meal/feedback session before hitting the road.
- Long chats. Yup, I want to hike along side you in the woods and talk. I want to eat food and talk. I want to shoot for fun (hopefully in the fog) and talk. I plan on having deep discussions about whatever I can think of and whatever you can think of as well. I want to discuss being competitive, feeling jealous, artistic slumps, you know, all the bad stuff that comes along with being an artist. I want to talk about it all AND shed light on these issues.
- Limited group size. I am looking for 5-7 people. This way you each get a ton of 1 on 1 time and exposure to my knowledge, and the group's knowledge. Think of it as a consortium, we each have many things to share.
I have about 8 years of experience dealing with a multitude of photography related things. You name it, I've most likely dealt with it - or someone going has. I've had my fair share of ups and downs, things I have no issue discussing with anyone. I've been in tough situations, and wonderful ones as well. I am willing to strip away my guard and bombard you with everything I know. It is in my best intention to not sugar coat anything. While the retreat will feature me, it will also be about you. My focus is each of you, as individuals and photographers. And not just wedding photographers, ANY photographer. Any artist. I invite anyone interested in honing their craft to attend. I want you to learn, laugh, get frustrated, come out of your shell, share, participate, and question. I want to make an impact. I hope the topics we discuss will affect you so much more than learning how to “run a business” and “be successful” because let’s be honest here…there’s so much more to happiness than that.

Event dates: 3/5/17 to 3/7/17
Location: The exact house location is still TBD but the event itself will be in the Catskill region so its accessible to the entire Northeast. You will be staying overnight for 2 nights which included in the price. This will give you a ton of constant exposure to my knowledge, and everyone else's as well. It will access give you access to food around, cameras to try, and other things as well. You will arrive the night of 3/5, after dinner. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided on 3/6 as well as a lot of learning. Breakfast will be provided on 3/7 and we will be leaving directly after.
Cost: I believe in fairness and I'm not looking to take advantage of anyone in regards to the cost. The following price includes a 2 night stay at a beautiful private house and any food/drinks available the entire time you are there. Therefore, I set the price at $495 per person if booked by 1/31/17 (after that date the price will go up to $545 per person). This includes everything mentioned above. It does NOT include travel to get to the location. Think of this as a 2 day event to help you get further in your art, life, and business.
