Blue Hill at Stone Barns Wedding in New York

A few months ago I had the wonderful opportunity to assist Brian Wright, half of the wonder duo of The Brothers Wright, for a great wedding in my neck of the woods. Blue Hill at Stone Barns is one of those venues I’ve been wanting to photograph a wedding at for quite some time now so when Brian was searching for an assistant, I jumped at the chance. On top of the chance to shoot at that location, I was excited about working Brian as him and his brother put out some amazing wedding work. I definitely recommend checking out their website. Karyn + Dave. Married at Stotesbury Mansion in Philadelphia.

Anyone who knows Dave and Karyn know they are a riot. Always cracking jokes. Lots of sarcasm along with a hint of a dry sense of humor. Just my kind of people. And after meeting them for lunch, It didn’t take me long to realize they were going to have a great wedding. One that I was honored to be a part of.

I’ll be honest though, I was a bit nervous to perform for these two. Dave is a local wedding photographer so the pressure was on. I love being asked to photograph the weddings of colleagues. Its humbling, fun, and also I challenge. And while I don’t get nervous the day of, those few minutes after you notify them their pictures are ready are a bit nerve-racking. Did I do a good job? Will they like them? I’m sure I’m not the only one that has those thoughts.

In the end, there was nothing to worry about. The wedding was great. The people were great. The day was great. There was a lot of sarcasm. A lot of jokes. And a ton of happiness. Dave and Karen were king and queen for the day, as noted in their special crowns they got to wear. And as the famous saying goes:

It’s good to be king.

Jessica + Tom’s Wedding. Friedman Farms.

I remember the phone call last year with Jessica. I remember the 1 or 2 hr conversation we had about weddings. About how the location a couple chooses should represent them. About photography. I love when those phone calls stick in your mind. You know its going to be good.

Fast forward to their engagement. This is when you know you are in the boonies:

Yup. Jessica lives on an unnamed state rural route. No name. Just a number. So they made me a fancy sign for me and I knew, right there when I saw it, this was going to be good.

Through the woods over rocks, mud, branches and finally you are at her house.

But this time it was for a wedding. At least I knew where to go. I didn’t need a sign the second time although I secretly wanted it to be there.

Besides the minor car issue I had where my assistant and I had to rig up a quick fix – which worked well by the way – the day went on without a hitch. The weather was perfect. The people were perfect.
The venue looked perfect. All was good.

Jessica married Tom. Life is good.
